JORGE MARIO BERGOGLIO
Francis (Latin: Franciscus; born Jorge Mario Bergoglio on 17 December 1936) is the 266th and current Pope of the Catholic Church, elected on 13 March 2013. He is the first Pope born in the Americas, and the first Pope from the Southern Hemisphere.
From 1998 to 2012, he served as the Archbishop of Buenos Aires, and was promoted to Cardinal in 2001.
Cardinal Bergoglio was elected Pope on the second day of the 2013 Papal conclave, taking the papal name Francis. Cardinal Bergoglio is the first Jesuit priest chosen to be pope. He is the first non-European Pope in modern times, although there have been Berber Popes in history.
